Our Heritage

History

Four generations of Hikmat — from a dawakhana founded in 1935 to the family that runs it today.

The Unani system of medicine owes its name and origin to Greece. It was the Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates (460–377 BC) who freed medicine from the realm of superstition and magic and gave it the status of a science; the theoretical framework of Unani rests on his teachings.

The system was brought to India by the Arabs, where it soon took firm root. Under British rule Unani medicine suffered a setback as state patronage was withdrawn, yet it continued to be practised — kept alive by the faith the common people placed in it. After independence, Unani was recognised as one of the Indian systems of medicine, and steps were taken to develop and propagate it.

Our family has been part of that effort for four generations.

1935

Aziziya Dawakhana is founded

Our elders Hakim Haji Faqir Mohammed and Hakim Haji Sirajuddin established Aziziya Dawakhana — taking the Unani system in a direction it badly needed at the time.

Alongside their work in Tib, both played an active part in the freedom struggle, and in Deeniyat they established several Islamic schools (deeni madaris) which continue to serve the community to this day.

The Next Generation

Hakeem Abdul Majeed Sahab

Hakeem Abdul Majeed Sahab — father of our founder — carried the work forward as a renowned Unani practitioner, with expertise in nabziyat (pulse diagnosis), herbs and minerals, and every sort of crude drug, along with vast experience in treating chronic disease.

It is from him that the practice, the discipline and the standards of our house were passed down.

Today

Sheikh al-Hadith Hakeem Molana Mufti Abdul Khaliq Sahab Qasmi

Son of Hakeem Abdul Majeed Sahab, our founder has given over 45 years to the field of Unani medicine. A graduate of Darul Uloom and Sheikhul Hadees at Jamia Kashiful Uloom, he combines deep religious scholarship with mastery of classical Tib — a rare pairing that shapes how every formulation in our house is prepared.

He has authored two books on Tib and has personally trained hundreds of students in Hikmat.

The Fourth Generation

Carrying it forward

Hakeem Salahuddin Ali, son of our founder, is Owner & Director of Himalaya Herbal Pharmacy. Ali Haider looks after the website and social media.

Ninety years on from 1935, the same principle holds: genuine medicine, prepared with care, within reach of every home.
